This year we are focused on tunnelling, completing excavation of station areas, preparing station foundations for the arrival of the tunnel boring machines, and building the elevated guideway. We provide ongoing updates about construction in advance to email subscribers, through alerts to traffic news outlets, social media posts and here on our website. Please see notifications below and contact us if you have specific questions about what’s happening currently on and near Broadway. Register to receive construction notices for specific station areas and general updates here.
You can access businesses, services and residences on Broadway throughout construction. Short-term elevated noise while the TBMs arrive and depart from the future Mount Pleasant Station.
The TBMs may create minor noise or vibrations noticeable at the surface, similar to when large equipment is operating in the area.
We anticipate that both TBMs will be clear of the Mount Pleasant area later this spring, with the total trip from Great Northern Way to Cypress Street taking approximately one year each.
BSPC is getting ready to launch the first tunnel boring machine (TBM) from Great Northern Way.
This is a critical milestone in the project and begins the next phase of construction activity.
We encourage you to check out the viewing windows installed in the fencing along Great Northern Way near Thornton St. to see Project progress.
Residents and businesses in the area should expect a period of elevated noise as the TBM begins boring under Great Northern Way. The noise related to boring is expected to decrease as the machine moves fully underground.
The TBMs will be tunneling approximately 15-20 metres underground. Vibrations should be unnoticeable at the surface, however minor vibrations similar to when large equipment is operating in the area may be felt at some times.
Tunnel boring activities will take place 24/7 for approximately the next fourteen months during excavation of both tunnels.

Construction of the columns for the elevated guideway is ongoing.
Completion of the Elevated Guideway’s 21 piers is imminent, and the next phase of construction to install the guideway begins in February 2023. The Elevated Guideway is expected to be completed by end of 2023.
Regular hours of work are Monday to Friday and occasional weekend work, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Girder installation will involve some night work from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Excavation: includes shoring, welding, drilling soil anchors, intermittent rock breaking and trucking activities to remove material.
Work on March 4 involves the first major pouring of the concrete foundation in the 300-block of W. Broadway.
Trucks will use the following streets:
Cambie Street between W. 2nd and W. 12th avenues
Yukon Street between W. 2nd and W. 12th avenues
12th Avenue between Cambie and Yukon streets
Broadway
Set up on site will begin around 5 a.m. on March 4, with the first concrete trucks arriving at 6 a.m. The concrete pour is scheduled until 10 p.m. with low noise work continuing overnight to finish related activities.
Night work to construct the future Broadway-City Hall Station continues through spring (click to view detailed notice)
Night work hours are from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Work is planned until June, 2023.
Night work includes work above and below the traffic deck delivering, handling and installing rebar for the concrete foundation.
Increased trucking activities, temporary lane closures and changes to pedestrian access to accommodate deliveries of equipment and materials to site and into the excavation.
Construction of the station is expected to continue into 2025 and is currently focused on completing the foundation and preparing for the arrival of the tunnel boring machines.
Work along Cambie continues with excavation that will enable the connection underground between the extended Millennium Line and the Canada Line.
The traffic deck will be fully complete once additional panels are installed to allow the eastbound bus stop to be relocated in front of the Broadway-City Hall Station entrance.
Hours of Work: Typical hours of work are Monday to Saturday from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. There may be occasional work on Sundays or holidays between the hours of 9am and 8pm. Please note the Project also has the ability to work 24/7 and we will provide further notifications in advance of specific activities.
BSPC is excavating beneath the traffic deck in preparation for the construction of the underground station.
As part of the excavation process, large pieces of rock may be uncovered and then broken apart in order to be removed.
This activity will occur intermittently between the hours of 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. For full hours of operation at this worksite, refer to the bullet points above.
Oak VGH Station
Typical hours of work: 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Intermittent night work.

General Information
Night work for piezometer, geotechnical, and CCTV inspections near future station locations to the end of 2023 (click to view detailed notice)
BSPC is returning to key locations to read geotechnical monitoring devices and piezometers (for water levels), as well as inspect utilities using closed-circuit TV (CCTV).
Readings will be taken over two nights, on a biweekly basis, until the end of 2023.
To minimize traffic disruptions, the work will occur overnight from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
This work could take up to two days and is not expected to be noisy.
Closed-circuit TV cameras will be lowered into the lines through manhole openings in the roadway to record utility conditions.
Work will begin near the Mount Pleasant Station in October and move westward towards other stations along the alignment through January 2023.
Work will be performed overnight from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. and noise levels may periodically increase.
People in the area can expect temporary single-lane closures of up to one hour at monitoring locations, reduced speeds, and to be detoured around the work as required.
The notice from December 9, 2021 included this work and we now have current scheduling, traffic details, and impacts to share.
Following geotechnical investigations across the alignment of the future Millennium Line extension, the Broadway Subway Project Corporation (BSPC) is returning to key locations to read geotechnical monitoring devices as well as reading water levels with a special tool called a piezometer.
The various geotechnical and piezometer readings will be taken over two nights, on a biweekly basis, until Winter 2022/2023.
To minimize traffic disruptions, the work will be performed overnight across the alignment.
There will be short-term traffic lane shifts (about 15-minutes in duration) at the test locations.
The Broadway Subway Project Corporation (BSPC) will be in your neighbourhood preparing for major construction work planned in the coming months. As part of this preparation, on-street parking will be removed during non rush periods near the future Oak-VGH, South Granville and Arbutus stations.
Parking meters will be removed by the City of Vancouver between 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parking will be unavailable starting as early as June 1, 2021 until the end of project construction in 2026.
Timing:
As early as June 1:
Laurel St – Oak St
As early as June 14:
Hemlock St – Granville St
Cypress St – Arbutus St.
City of Vancouver will install signage and bag parking meters a few days in advance of the removal. Please watch for onsite notices.
